हिमाचल प्रदेश का शाब्दिक अर्थ होता है, बर्फ से ढका हुआ क्षेत्र। हिमाचल प्रदेश भारत के उत्तर पश्चिम में स्थित एक छोटा सा राज्य है। यह सामान्यत: काफी ठण्डी जलवायु वाला क्षेत्र है। अधिक उंचाई वाले क्षेत्रों में काफी बर्फबारी होती है। जबकि कम उंचाई वाले क्षेत्र जिनकी सीमा पंजाब से लगती है, वे सामान्यत: काफी गर्म क्षेत्र हैं। हिमाचल का कुल क्षेत्रफल 55,673 वर्ग किलोमीटर है। समुद्र तल से हिमाचल की ऊंचाई 350 मीटर से 7026 मीटर है।
हिमाचल प्रदेश की उत्तरी सीमा जम्मू-कश्मीर, पश्चिमी सीमा पंजाब, दक्षिणी सीमा हरियाणा तथा पूर्वी सीमा तिब्बत से लगती है। दक्षिण पूर्व में हिमाचल की सीमा उत्तराखंड से लगती है। हिमाचल की कुछ सीमा उत्तर प्रदेश से भी लगती है।
